A man is charged after allegedly gunning down an unarmed teen during a large fight in October.
Deonte Taylor, 32, of Chicago and Gary, is charged with murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and a gun enhancement. He was arrested Wednesday morning.
Police responded Oct. 19 to the 1200 block of E. 36th Place in Gary.
The victim, Darviar Anthony, 18, of Gary, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at Methodist. Police found multiple shell casings at the crime scene.
Witnesses said about a dozen “juveniles” were fighting there in a group brawl, Det. Jason Szemes wrote.
When a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix pulled up, the passenger, later identified as Taylor, opened fire as the “fight was breaking up,” according to the affidavit.
“He’s still breathing,” Taylor said. “Come get your (man).”
Taylor’s relatives said they went there to try to stop the fighting.
“Why would you punch me when you see me holding this gun,” Taylor said, according to court documents.
Taylor shot Anthony three times, records state, stood over him and fired two more shots.
“Let’s go,” Taylor said.
