Multiple victims reported in shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Multiple people were shot Saturday in the area of Brown University, police said, as the Ivy League school issued an active shooter alert and urged students and staff to take shelter during the second day of final exams.

Police did not immediately release details about the number of victims, their conditions or the circumstances of the shooting.

University officials initially told students and staff that a suspect was in custody, before later saying that was not the case and that police were still searching for a suspect or suspects, according to alerts issued through Brown’s emergency notification system.

The reported shooting occurred near the Barus & Holley building, a seven-story complex that houses the university’s School of Engineering and physics department. According to the university’s website, the building includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and offices.

President Donald Trump said late in the afternoon that he has been briefed on the shooting.

“God bless the victims and the families of the victims!” he said on his social media site.

Students were urged to shelter in place as police responded to the scene, and people were told to avoid the area. Officials cautioned that information remained preliminary as investigators worked to determine what had occurred.

Police were actively investigating and still gathering information from the scene, said Kristy DosReis, the chief public information officer for the city of Providence.

Brown is a private institution with roughly 7,300 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students. Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.

Chris Collins picks up his 200th win at Northwestern with Wildcats’ 40-point rout of Jackson State

Nick Martinelli scored 22 points to help Northwestern steamroll Jackson State 93-53 on Saturday, giving Chris Collins his 200th victory as Wildcats coach.

Martinelli’s layup 44 seconds after tipoff gave Northwestern a lead it never relinquished at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston. Angelo Ciaravino scored 13 points in 18 minutes and Arrinten Page added 12 points for the Wildcats (6-4), who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Daeshun Ruffin’s 20 points led the Tigers (1-9), who shot just 29% compared with Northwestern’s 50%. The Wildcats were dominant on the glass, grabbing 45 rebounds to Jackson State’s 29. They also scored 34 points in the paint and 19 points off fast breaks. The Wildcats shot 50% from the field and held JSU to 29%.

Collins, 51, is the second coach in school history to reach the 200-win mark, joining Dutch Lonborg (234). Collins, who grew up in Northbrook and starred at Glenbrook North and Duke, took over at Northwestern in 2013 and has led the Wildcats to three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Mamdani Suggests NYPD May Arrest ICE Agents Enforcing Federal Law

Mamdani Suggests NYPD May Arrest ICE Agents Enforcing Federal Law

During an interview with MSNOW Senior Political and National Reporter Jacob Soboroff, New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani faced pointed questions about whether his rhetoric on accountability extends to federal immigration enforcement, and Mamdani suggested his police force might arrest federal officers enforcing federal immigration laws.

Soboroff didn’t dance around the issue, asking directly whether there’s a scenario where the NYPD under Mamdani’s leadership could arrest ICE agents on city streets for their treatment of illegal immigrants.

“I’ve also heard you say that no one is above the law and anyone can be held accountable, and that goes for the president of the United States, and it also goes for ICE agents,” Soboroff began.

“I don’t want to put words in your mouth, but is there a scenario in which the NYPD, under you, could arrest ICE agents on the streets of New York for their behavior towards immigrants?”

Mamdani initially tried to avoid answering the question.

“My focus is for the NYPD to not be assisting ICE in their immigration enforcement and to actually be following the policies of sanctuary city law,” he said.

But he didn’t stop there.

“I do believe, however, that, for the law to have meaning, there has to be accountability for all of us,” Mamdani continued, framing the issue as one of equal justice rather than what it actually is—a direct challenge to federal authority.

He insisted this accountability must apply “no matter who we’re referring to,” suggesting ICE agents enjoy no special status in his vision of law enforcement.

Soboroff, however, seemed to want a more concrete answer and pressed about whether ICE agents could actually be arrested by NYPD officers.

“So, in other words, there is a circumstance in which if an ICE agent violates someone’s rights here in New York City, they could be arrested by the police department?” he asked.

Mamdani did not deny it.

“I think if an ICE agent is breaking the law, then that is a law that they should be held accountable to,” he declared.

Zohran Mamdani says he will not allow NYPD to assist ICE in NYC.

When asked about ICE entering the subways, Mamdani says it’s his job to “make sure that doesn’t take place.”

He says, “what New Yorkers need from a federal administration is the kind of partnership that will… pic.twitter.com/Ej36h2iig9

— Wall Street Mav (@WallStreetMav) December 10, 2025

Though he didn’t explicitly say so, the implication was clear: federal immigration officers could be arrested by New York City police officers if Mamdani decides they’ve crossed whatever line he chooses to draw. Mamdani is clearly signaling that preventing the New York Police Department from assisting ICE agents isn’t enough. Mamdani is talking about active interference by using the NYPD as a barrier to block federal immigration enforcement and even arrest ICE agents carrying out lawful deportation orders.

Mamdani’s plan puts him in direct conflict with the Constitution. The Supremacy Clause establishes that federal law takes precedence over conflicting state or local laws, and immigration enforcement is clearly a federal responsibility. If the NYPD starts blocking ICE or arresting federal agents carrying out lawful deportations, it isn’t “standing up for immigrants”—it’s defying the law. Local policy can’t override federal authority, and any attempt would spark a legal battle the city would almost certainly lose. Beyond the constitutional issues, the practical consequences would be chaotic. Mamdani is essentially declaring himself the final judge of whether federal officers can operate in New York City, ignoring that ICE agents answer to Washington, not City Hall.

This is not the first time Mamdani has anointed himself the final arbiter over the law in New York City. He previously warned he intends to enforce the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he ever sets foot in the city. He staked out that position even before taking office, and he hasn’t backed away from it.

“I’ve said time and again that I believe this is a city of international law, and being a city of international law means looking to uphold international law,” he said. “And that means upholding the warrants from the International Criminal Court, whether they’re for Benjamin Netanyahu or Vladimir Putin,” he said last month, even though he doesn’t have the legal authority to do so.

“New York City mayor does not have the power to do that,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul admitted earlier this month.

Netanyahu has also laughed off Mamdani’s threats. Appearing via video at the New York Times DealBook, Netanyahu said that the threat wouldn’t keep him away from New York City. “Why don’t you wait and see?” he said. “Yes, I’ll come to New York.”

Mamdani’s approach is a direct challenge to the country’s constitutional order. By positioning the NYPD to block or even arrest federal agents, potentially, he risks a showdown with the federal government that the city is almost certain to lose. New Yorkers should be wary of a mayor who treats his own judgment as superior to the law, because when local officials ignore federal authority, the result is chaos, not justice.

Connor Bedard’s injury leaves a big void for the Chicago Blackhawks. Who will fill the star center’s skates?

Connor Bedard’s stellar start to the season is on hold. But for how long is the question.

The Chicago Blackhawks center will miss at least Saturday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center after suffering a right shoulder injury a night earlier. He was injured in the final second of the Hawks’ 3-2 road loss to the St. Louis Blues on Friday night.

Bedard was positioned in the right faceoff circle with Blues center Brayden Schenn with 0.8 seconds remaining in the third period. Schenn plowed through Bedard to prevent a quick shot, and Bedard’s arm twisted in the process.

Bedard skated to the locker room wincing in pain with his concerned teammates looking on. Hawks coach Jeff Blashill quickly ruled out Bedard for Saturday’s game, and the center will be reevaluated Monday.

Blashill had no timeline update on Bedard as of Saturday morning, so the Hawks — and their fans — will have to wait anxiously to see how serious the injury to the star center is. Blashill also addressed the play, saying he saw no ill intent from Schenn and calling the injury a “freak accident.”

“Brayden Schenn’s a really good hockey player, he’s not trying to do damage to him there,” Blashill said Saturday. “Connor gets injured before any push happens.”

Bedard, a hopeful for Canada’s Olympic roster, is off to the best start of his career, registering 44 points on 19 goals and 25 assists in 31 games. The star center trails only Eddie Olczyk (65 goals, 180 points) for the most goals and points in franchise history before age 21. Bedard has 64 goals and 172 points and doesn’t turn 21 until July 17.

Forward Nick Lardis was recalled from the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs and could make his NHL debut Saturday night. The 20-year-old left winger has never shied away from shooting the puck.

A Hawks third-round pick in 2023, Lardis has 13 goals and 13 assists in 26 games with Rockford this season. He hasn’t lost a step from his time with the OHL’s Branford Bulldogs, with whom he had 117 points (71 goals, 46 assists) in 65 games in 2024-25.

The NHL is a different beast from the AHL, but pro hockey is also a large step from the juniors, and Lardis has had no trouble adjusting. It’s not the ideal call-up for the winger, but he has a chance to make his NHL stay permanent.

“He’s a guy who’s scored a lot of goals throughout his young career going back to junior and he’s had a pretty good start to his American league,” Blashill said. “We felt like (Lardis) gives us another potential offensive guy that can come in and provide some scoring punch.

“You never know how guys are going to come in and play. I don’t want him to dip his toes into the water, I want him to jump right in. Hopefully he can come and give us a good minutes.”

Blashill will make Frank Nazar his top-line center in the absence of Bedard. The forward out of Michigan hasn’t scored since Oct. 28, but has been effective in setting up his wingers for scoring chances.

Without Bedard, someone will have to fill the void and be the offensive anchor for the Hawks. It would be perfect timing for Nazar to snap out of his drought in the next couple of games.

“(Frank) becomes the No. 1 center (and) that comes with some responsibility,” Blashill said. “He’s proven he can do it, (so) he’s got to go out and play at that high level that he’s showing at different times this year and a year ago.”

Ryan Greene will move back to the center position, Blashill said. Forward Dominic Toninato, who was recalled from Rockford on Tuesday, will see ice time as well.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and others who took on Belarus’ president are among the freed prisoners

VILNIUS, Lithuania — Belarusian authorities on Saturday freed 123 prisoners, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski and key opposition figures Maria Kolesnikova and Viktar Babaryka, as part of a deal with Washington that lifted U.S. sanctions on the country’s vital fertilizer exports.

A close ally of Russia, Belarus’ authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko, has ruled the nation of 9.5 million with an iron fist for more than three decades. Belarus has been repeatedly sanctioned by the West for its rampant crackdown on dissent and for allowing Moscow to use its territory in the invasion of Ukraine. Belarus has released hundreds of prisoners since July 2024 in what is seen as an effort by Lukashenko to win a reprieve from the bruising restrictions.

Here’s a look at some of the prominent prisoners released Saturday and others who are still in prison:

Ales Bialiatski and Viasna rights advocates

Human rights advocate Bialiatski won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022 along with the prominent Russian rights group Memorial and Ukraine’s Center for Civil Liberties. Awarded the prize while in jail awaiting trial, he was later convicted of smuggling and financing actions that violated the public order — charges widely denounced as politically motivated — and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The 63-year-old, who founded Belarus’ oldest and most prominent human rights group, Viasna, was imprisoned at a penal colony in Gorki in a facility notorious for beatings and hard labor.

Speaking to The Associated Press, Bialiatski said his release after 1,613 days in prison came as a surprise and felt “like I jumped out of icy water into a normal, warm room.”

Bialiatski, who looked pale and emaciated but energetic, vowed to continue his human rights work, saying that “more than a thousand political prisoners in Belarus remain behind bars simply because they chose freedom. And, of course, I am their voice.”

Uladzimir Labkovich, another Viasna activist implicated in the same case as Bialiatki, was also released.

Maria Kolesnikova, opposition leader

Kolesnikova was a key figure who helped organize the mass protests that shook Belarus in 2020. She was a close ally of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the opposition leader who was forced into exile after challenging Lukashenko in the 2020 vote.

Kolesnikova, known for her close-cropped hair and trademark gesture of forming a heart with her hands, became an even greater symbol of resistance when Belarusian authorities tried to deport her in September 2020. Driven to the Ukrainian border, she tore up her passport and walked back into Belarus, where authorities took her back into custody.

The 43-year-old professional flutist was convicted in 2021 on charges including conspiracy to seize power and sentenced to 11 years in prison. She fell seriously ill behind bars and underwent surgery.

“It’s a feeling of incredible happiness!” she said Saturday after being released. “To see the eyes of the people who are dear to me, to hug them, to understand that we are all free people now. At the same time, I am thinking about those people who are not yet free, and I am very much looking forward to the moment when we can all hug each other.”

Viktar Babaryka, former presidential hopeful

Viktar Babaryka, a banker and philanthropist, waded into politics in 2020 and sought to challenge Lukashenko in the presidential election. He quickly gained broad popularity but was denied registration for the race and was jailed less than two months before the vote in what he denounced as “medieval repressions.”

Babaryka, 62, was ultimately convicted on corruption charges that were widely seen as politically driven and sentenced to 14 years in prison in July 2021. At the time, the U.S. embassy denounced the verdict as a “cruel sham,” saying it showed that Lukashenko’s “regime will stop at nothing to keep power.”

Maxim Znak, a lawyer and part of Babaryka’s team who was convicted along with him, was also released Saturday.

Maryna Zolatava, prominent journalist

A number of journalists were released Saturday, including the editor of the popular independent news site Tut.by, Maryna Zolatava.

Zolatava was arrested in May 2021 and was later sentenced to 12 years in prison following her conviction on charges of incitement and distributing materials urging actions aimed at harming national security — counts that authorities widely use against independent journalists and opposition supporters. International journalism organizations, including Reporters Without Borders, have persistently called for her release.

Still in prison: journalist Poczobut and others

Andrzej Poczobut, a correspondent for the influential Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza and a leading figure in Belarus’ Polish minority, was arrested in March 2021.

Now 52 years old, he was convicted in February 2023 of “damaging national security” and “inciting hatred” for his coverage of the protests that erupted after the 2020 vote and sentenced to eight years in prison.

He was sent to a harsh maximum-security prison despite concerns about his health, and he has repeatedly refused to ask Lukashenko for pardon.

Among others still behind bars are Viasna activists Marfa Rabkova and Valiantsin Stefanovic, and Babaryka’s son Eduard, who helped run his father’s presidential campaign.
