Two people rescued during house fire in Aurora, fire department says
Two people were rescued, and others evacuated, during a two-alarm fire Saturday morning in Aurora that left a 2½-story single-family home uninhabitable, according to the Aurora Fire Department.
On Saturday at around 8:29 a.m., the fire department responded to a reported structure fire in the 200 block of Prairie Street on Aurora’s West Side, according to a news release from the fire department.
Multiple 911 calls reported people trapped inside, and responding crews found visible smoke while en route, officials said. Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke coming from a 2½-story single-family home, with visible fire coming from the basement, according to the release.
Several people were trapped near second-floor windows, the release said, and one resident jumped into the arms of an Aurora police officer before ladders were placed. Another person was rescued by firefighters using a ground ladder on the side of the home.
The remaining occupants were able to evacuate, and firefighters conducted searches to ensure no one was left inside, according to the release.
Two civilians and a police officer ultimately sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital during the incident, the news release said. Having sustained significant damage, the home was declared uninhabitable, officials said.
Four engine companies, two truck companies, three medic units and two chief officers — 26 personnel in all — responded to the scene, the release said.
Firefighters remained on the scene for an extended period to help with salvage and ventilation and to help residents recover personal belongings, the release said. Members of Aurora’s Emergency Management Agency assisted with traffic control due to icy conditions caused by the firefighting efforts.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Aurora Fire Department, the release said.

Powell To Attend As Supreme Court To Review Trump’s Firing Of Fed Governor Lisa Cook
Powell To Attend As Supreme Court To Review Trump’s Firing Of Fed Governor Lisa Cook
The Supreme Court on Wednesday are expected to review the legality of President Donald Trump’s firing of Fed Governor Lisa Cook last August over allegations of mortgage fraud.
In a letter to Cook, Trump cited a provision of the Federal Reserve act of 1913 which allows a president to fire members “for cause.”
Cook challenged the firing, and after a lower court reinstated her, Trump asked the Supreme Court to intervene. During today’s oral arguments, the justices are expected to probe several legal issues – including whether the mortgage allegations constitute the sort of cause that allows firings under the Federal Reserve Act.
Of note, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is planning to attend – which US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday said would be a mistake.
Powell’s plan to attend the court’s oral arguments is a potent symbol of the administration’s ongoing clash with the Fed following U.S. Department of Justice threats to pursue a criminal investigation of him. Powell called the threat a “pretext” to pressure him over monetary policy. –Reuters
“I actually think that’s a mistake,” Bessent told CNBC. “If you’re trying not to politicize the Fed, for the Fed chair to be sitting there, trying to put his thumb on the scale, is a real mistake.”
The Alleged Fraud
Cook was slapped with a criminal referral on Aug. 15 by Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) chairman Bill Pulte, who alleged that Cook lied on one of her mortgage agreements – specifically representing it as her primary residence.
As the Epoch Times notes further, ten days later Trump sent a letter to Cook informing her of her termination. “At a minimum, the conduct at issue exhibits the sort of gross negligence in financial transactions that calls into question your competence and trustworthiness as a financial regulator,” he said.
After Cook sued, a federal judge in Washington reinstated her. In a more tentative order, the judge said that Trump probably didn’t have a valid cause for firing Cook.
Under this judge’s interpretation, for Trump to fire Cook, he would have to do so for a reason related to an unfaithful execution of her statutory duties while she was in office. Cook’s alleged fraud took place before she began serving at the Federal Reserve.
Trump has asked the Supreme Court to lift this block while litigation continues in lower courts. Typically, these types of appeals, which come on the emergency docket, are decided without oral argument. In this case, however, the Supreme Court deferred its decision until it heard arguments.
The Justice Department told the Supreme Court in September 2025 that not only was Trump’s cause sufficient, but that courts didn’t have the authority to review his determination of that cause.
Reinstating Officials
Separate from Congress’s phrasing, the power of judges to reinstate fired officials is also under scrutiny in both Cook’s case and another case that was heard in December 2025.
For months, lower court judges have been reversing Trump’s firings of high-level bureaucrats. In response, the Trump administration argued that doing so was overstepping judicial authority and that the more appropriate remedy to illegal firings was back pay.
The Supreme Court is expected to address that issue in Trump v. Slaughter, which focused on the president’s ability to fire members of the Federal Trade Commission.
It’s unclear how they will rule, and they didn’t focus much on the issue during oral argument on Dec. 8, 2025. But in its emergency docket decisions, the Supreme Court has indicated some sympathy for Trump’s position.
Cook’s case is unique for multiple reasons, including that it raises questions about whether officials have a constitutional right to their positions in the federal government. In a briefing to the Supreme Court, Cook cited the Fifth Amendment, which says the government cannot take away someone’s property without due process.
The lower court in Washington said that Cook had a property interest in her position and that Trump failed to provide the necessary due process before removing her. Specifically, the judge said that Trump needed to provide some kind of notice and hearing for Cook.
In response, the Justice Department noted that Trump waited five days before dismissing her after notifying her of the charges. Solicitor General D. John Sauer also denied that offices like Cook’s were property and that requiring a notice and hearing would “wreak havoc on sensitive presidential decision-making.”
Federal Reserve Independence
What also makes Cook’s case unique, and what may give her an edge over other federal officials, is how the Supreme Court views the Federal Reserve’s independence.
Last year, a majority of the justices temporarily allowed Trump to remove the heads of two labor boards who had tried to compare their agencies to the Federal Reserve. Allowing Trump’s firings, which overrode similar laws restricting removals, would effectively call into question the independence of the Federal Reserve.
A majority of the justices rejected this comparison, stating that the “Federal Reserve is a uniquely structured, quasi-private entity that follows in the distinct historical tradition of the First and Second Banks of the United States.”
Cook has referenced that language while warning about the purported implications of Trump’s firing. Her attorneys said in September 2025 that the Supreme Court’s earlier recognition of the Fed’s independence “would have little meaning if a ‘for cause’ restriction gave the President unreviewable discretion to simply deem any governor ‘unfit to serve’ based on anything he deems ’misconduct.’”
Allowing Trump to fire Cook, they said, “would sound the death knell for the central-bank independence that has helped make the United States’ economy the strongest in the world.”
Trump, meanwhile, has underscored the nature of his authority under Article II of the Constitution, which vests the federal government’s executive power in the president.
“Article II allows the President to determine what process to follow when removing executive officers, and courts cause irreparable harm to the separation of powers when they wrongly usurp that authority,” the Justice Department said in its brief.

Police Use Tear Gas, Stun Grenades Against Farmers Protesting Mercosur Trade Agreement At EU Parliament In Strasbourg
During the farmers’ protest in Strasbourg, ahead of the European Parliament’s vote on the Mercosur trade deal, police used tear gas against demonstrators seeking an appeal to block the agreement.
Officers reportedly were forced to throw stun grenades at the protesters as they tried to enter the parliament building.
“Farmers are trying to get into the European Parliament. The police used tear gas,” wrote MEP Maciej Wąsik of the Law and Justice party (PiS) on social media.

Remix News reported yesterday that around 4,000 farmers from across the European Union, including Italy, Belgium, and Germany, were expected to descend on Strasbourg, with French farmers forming the majority.

Actual numbers were cited as high as 4,500, with the protesters are demanding that the Mercosur trade agreement signed by Ursula von der Leyen be blocked.
“Even if some countries support Mercosur, within those countries there are MEPs who have serious doubts, and it could come down to just a few votes, so we need to keep up the pressure,” said Hervé Lapie, secretary general of the National Federation of Farmers’ Unions (FNSEA).
The European Parliament is scheduled to vote on a possible appeal to the European Court of Justice, but this seems unlikely. The parliament’s main political group, the EPP (which includes the Civic Coalition and the Polish People’s Party), has announced that it will not support such a motion, paving the way for an easy ratification vote today.

The Mercosur agreement is intended to boost EU exports of cars, machinery, wines and spirits to Latin America, while facilitating imports into Europe of South American beef, sugar, rice, honey and soybeans. Farmers’ organizations, however, warn that the deal will destabilize European agriculture by exposing it to cheaper imports that do not necessarily comply with EU production standards, citing what they describe as insufficient controls.
The Mercosur deal has also revealed that the EU’s concerns about climate change are flimsy at best. The deal will see cheap and dangerous agricultural goods pour into Europe from halfway across the world. The EU’s “farm-to-table” programs also appear to have been blown up by the new deal. Of course, there is nothing about “eat local” when food is being shipped from the other side of the world.
Brazil alone allows the use of as many as 3,669 pesticides and has cleared away millions of acres of rainforest to create monoculture mega farms. The destruction of the rain forest will only accelerate with this new deal.
One Brazilian state, Mato Grosso, eatures the most “agrotoxicity” in the world. Soon, Europeans will be eating this food.
“This Brazilian state is the kingdom of the agricultural industry. Cotton, rice, sugarcane, corn, massive production of transgenic soybeans, and record pesticide use. Mato Grosso wins every global competition in the field of agrotoxicity. That’s the term used by those who condemn the chemical empire. Brazil allows the use of 3,669 pesticides. It’s a veritable El Dorado for corporations, primarily European ones. Products banned on the Old Continent are sold here,” stated the French-German documentary “Pesticides: Europe’s Hypocrisy.”

Alex Nowak-Tice is reaching new heights for Lake Zurich. The 6-foot-3 forward ‘realized she can dominate.’
Basketball has been part of Lake Zurich senior forward Alex Nowak-Tice’s life for as long as she can remember.
Her father, Brad Tice, a 6-foot-9 forward, played college basketball at Central Florida and Loyola and has been a significant influence.
“I’ve been playing since my eyes were open,” Nowak-Tice said. “I’ve always had a basketball in my hand. I’ve tried other sports, but basketball spoke to me. I had a strong feel for the game.”
The 6-foot-3 Nowak-Tice is showing that more than ever in her fourth varsity season, averaging 10.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists for the Bears (14-8, 8-1), who are in second place in the North Suburban Conference.
The Winona State recruit scored 20 points in a conference win against Warren on Dec. 2, grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds in a conference loss to first-place Libertyville on Dec. 12, had 19 points and six rebounds in a loss to Hersey on Dec. 23, and had 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists in a win against Lyons on Jan. 17.
“Alex has grown by leaps and bounds and improved a lot,” Lake Zurich coach Chris Bennett said. “A lot of it was getting that confidence every player gets as a college scholarship player. She realized she can dominate this game, not just react. She can make plays, passes and finishes around the basket. She’s rebounding like a beast.”
Rebounding has been a point of emphasis for Nowak-Tice this season.
“I think my rebounding has excelled compared to the past few years,” she said. “My No. 1 goal is to be the best rebounder on the team or at least get a hand on every ball. … Rebounding is such an important skill you have to have.”
Lake Zurich junior forward Kaitlin Wahlund said Nowak-Tice’s efforts are paying dividends.
“Alex uses her strength to get good positioning in the paint and secure rebounds,” Wahlund said. “Her ability to finish through contact makes her a very reliable scoring option and a dependable post player. She also creates opportunities for her teammates and succeeds during high-pressure situations.”
Lake Zurich senior point guard Layne Nordstrom said Nowak-Tice is also a good leader.
“Alex stays calm under pressure and communicates well with everyone on the team,” Nordstrom said.
As for handling pressure, Tice said he has emphasized the mental side of the sport to help his daughter overcome the highs and lows.
“Pressure is something we’ve talked about throughout her career,” Tice said. “The biggest thing is to have the courage and the preparation to take that shot. Individual pressure in a team game is just something we put in our head. It’s more about never getting too high and never getting too low.
“You have to learn from any mistakes you make, and it’s always on to the next play. Deep breath, visualize and live with the result.”
Nowak-Tice said working with Legos helps too. Figuring out how the pieces fit is a more low-key challenge than hitting a big shot.
“Legos puts my mind at ease when I’m stressed out,” she said. “I will build Legos, especially when I have a bad game or I’m down, or do a puzzle. Both take a lot of time.”
With time, the Bears have rounded into shape, winning five games in a row before a loss to Indiana power Crown Point at Coach Kipp’s Hoopsfest at Benet on Monday.
“The team is playing well now,” Nowak-Tice said. “I think we can make it pretty far this year with the height we have. We have to be one of the tallest teams in Illinois.”
