The Will County Board voted Thursday to approve a landscaping business on Cedar Road in Homer Glen, over the objections of the Homer Township supervisor who said the proposed site was off a dangerous road and not conducive to work trucks.
Cedar Road Associates plans to build its landscape and maintenance business on 17.3 acres at 17958 S. Cedar Road. Plans call for a 16,000-square-foot storage building and a 2,500-square-foot office. The business is expected to be open weekdays and Saturdays.
The planned location is on the south side of Cedar Road, near Bruce Road, on a curved street. The business proposal brought to light some issues with that section of Cedar Road.
Homer Township Supervisor Sue Steilen said there have been numerous accidents, including fatalities, and said a traffic study should be completed before any business plan is approved. She said it was unsafe for trucks hauling landscaping to enter and exit the road with cars speeding around the curve.
Board member Steve Balich, a Homer Glen Republican, opposed the project, saying the traffic and shape of the road already creates a hardship for the area.
“It is extremely dangerous, especially at night,” Balich said.
Richard Kavanagh, the landscaper’s attorney, said the business agreed a traffic impact study. He acknowledged the traffic speed is high in the area.
County board members said they recognized the concerns with the road and directed Jeff Ronaldson, the county’s transportation director, to review the speed limit and whether other improvements should be made.
Cedar Road is a county highway. Ronaldson said improvements to the corridor are in the county’s 20-year plan.
Board member Mark Revis, a Plainfield Republican, said the board should be business-friendly in a climate when some business owners are opting to leave the state.
Kavanagh said the business also plans to place a significant berm with evergreen trees on its property lines to buffer it from its neighbors.
