Naval authorities are investigating the death of a service member who was found dead earlier this month at the Great Lakes base, the Lake County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday.
The coroner identified the service member as Joshua Jones, 19. The Florida native was stationed at the base, authorities said.
Emergency personnel responded to a call for medical assistance at about 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 8 and found Jones unresponsive in a barracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner’s office performed an autopsy Monday, but results are pending further toxicology reports.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is leading the investigation into the death.
The Navy said Jones was a seaman apprentice and a student at the Surface Combat Training Command.
“The Navy mourns the loss of our shipmate and sends condolences to the sailor’s family, friends, and fellow sailors during this difficult time,” the statement said.
