Schools closed across north suburbs as sub-zero temperatures arrive in the Chicago area

There is no in-school attendance Friday for thousands of students across Chicagoland, including in suburban Norridge, Park Ridge, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove and Niles, amid arctic-like temperatures with dangerous windchills that moved into the area overnight.

Starting Thursday, school officials sent out notifications to families advising that classes would either be canceled due to the weather or students would do remote learning. The closures, which include district offices, also affect extracurricular activities.

Area school districts impacted include Park Ridge-based Maine Township High School District 207, Skokie-based Niles Township High School District 219 – which serves students from Niles, Morton Grove, Lincolnwood and Skokie – Ridgewood High School District 234 in Norridge, Niles-Park Ridge School District 64..

“All afterschool activities are also cancelled including practices, rehearsals, games, performances and meetings. Based upon the forecast, the plan is that events scheduled for Saturday … will be held,” District 207 school leaders announced.

The one-day closure is being considered an emergency day for the district, with no plans for e-learning stated.

District 219, however, moved its more than 4,500 students to e-learning. School officials noted in that district’s announcement that Friday is an attendance day for the students of its two high schools, Niles North and Niles West. But, before- and after-school activities are canceled.

“Students and teachers will work remotely from home. Please note the important information below,” reads the District 219 closure announcement.
The district’s e-learning plan is available on the District 219 website, according to officials.

At District 64, one of the area elementary school districts, schools and offices are closed for the day “due to the extreme below-freezing wind chill forecasted (-30 below zero) throughout the area,” according to the district announcement.

In addition to other activities, the district canceled the Beyond the Bell program which is part of its partnership with the Park District of Park Ridge.
